Could I have ADHD?
Adult attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) is a mental health disorder that includes a combination of persistent problems, such as difficulty paying attention/focus, hyperactivity and/or impulsive behavior.
Many adults are unaware they have ADHD and struggle to complete everyday tasks and build relationships. Signs and symptoms can vary depending on the person and can be difficult to identify. When these symptoms of Adult ADHD lead to unstable relationships, poor work or school performance, low self-esteem, and other problems it is time to seek help.
Symptoms of Adult ADHD could include:
1. Lack of focus- This is more than just finding it hard to pay attention. It’s being easily distracted, overlooking the details, and having issues following through and completing tasks at work, home or school.
2. Disorganized- Problems multitasking or prioritizing tasks at work, home or school. These everyday life struggles can be more challenging when you have ADHD.
3. Time management issues – Poor time management skills and showing up late can be symptoms of Adult ADHD. Punctuality is important for most occupations, but for those with ADHD, constantly being late or forgetting appointments can have a major impact your daily routine.
4. Absent-minded - Forgetfulness is a human flaw, but it becomes a problem when forgetting impacts your career or relationships. Others can confuse forgetfulness with carelessness or lack of intelligence because they are not familiar with ADHD symptoms.
5. Excessive activity or restlessness- People with ADHD can find themselves fidgeting or in constant motion and can be frustrating when they can’t do something immediately. Restlessness can often turn into anxiety, a very common symptom of adult ADHD, as the mind tends to replay worrisome events on repeat.
When these symptoms impact your life, it is time to talk with your health care provider about a diagnosis that might include ADHD. Different types of health care professionals may diagnose and supervise treatment for ADHD. Treatments can be a combination of medications, counseling, daily journaling, and education. Seek a provider who has training and experience in caring for adults with ADHD.
